Vellum Modeling Examples! Procedural Modeling Techniques Part 2
This video was more of a show’n tell way of demonstrating how the Vellum Solver can be used in Procedural Modeling in Houdini. The idea of using vellum to help us create various types of geometry is very popular and exists in many different 3D applications including Houdini, zBrush, Blender, Maya, and much more.
When you hear the word “vellum” in 3D computer graphics, you’ll probably think of clothing simulation, clothing design, and cushion-like pillow objects. The applications of this can be used in so many creative ways for even hard rigid objects or even destruction simulation scenes.
In this video, I show you 9 different small and large scale scenes powered by vellum that can be surprisingly easy to create!
Scrap Paper

One of my favorite ones is using the Vellum Solver to create a pile of scrap paper on the floor. The chaotic messy scrap paper helps sell the look of frustration in the character. This is super easy to create and generates a very effective look.

Posters Flying all over the City
Vellum Paper Posters blown by Wind Force procedurally modeled in Houdini & Rendered in Blender Cycles
Urban city streets are littered with garbage that’s layered all over the streets, so I decided to create a scene with posters plastered over 1 city block being blown away by a powerful wind force. The city block was created using my Procedural City Generator HDA that may be familiar to some viewers because it was shown in a previous video.
Flat Tires

The Vellum ability to be squished and severely deform the shape of the geometry makes it perfect for creating flat tires. Sculpting flat tires isn’t hard either, but the Vellum Solver in Houdini makes it even easier and very procedural, which means you can generate flat tires of various shapes and sizes with a click of a single button.
Ice Cream
Scoops of Ice Cream modeled using Houdini's Vellum Solver & Rendered in Blender Cycles
Vellum is capable of creating very interesting surfaces. I used this to create scoops of ice cream in Houdini. I do know the selling point in this render is probably the ice cream shader and not the actual shape, but I added this technique to the list of the different things you can make using Houdini’s Vellum Solver.
Coats, Pillow, Clothes
Vellum in Houdini was designed to create clothing, so this was a must to add onto my list of things to model using Vellum.

Procedural City Generator (from a previous video)
I used a HDA from a previous project that I created to procedural generate a city to generate 1 city block so I could hang up posters and demonstrate the Vellum flyers being blown away by wind.
