Vellum Paper Tornado
I build up with 4 Basic Concepts and demonstrate how the concepts can be applied to create a Vellum Paper Tornado effect.
I start off developing the tornado shape using a simple POPnet (particles simulation in Houdini) and once you get the desired tornado motion, you can then plug it into a Vellum simulation to create various different types of effects! Here I create tons of scrap paper sheets on the floor that floats around in a tornado motion path.
Cross Product & Right Hand Thumb Rule
I include various types of illustrative example in the HIP file explaining how the Right Hand Thumb rule can be used to help develop different motion paths in Houdini.
The thumb is always pointing toward the Blue vector, which is the orthogonal to the Green plane. This is what cross product will get us!
Tornado Shape
In the images below, I try to illustrate what goes on inside a POPnet driven by a tornado force when the cross product is applied over and over again on the same particle. I draw out the motion path for a single particle to give you an idea how the tornado shape is formed.
Pyro, FLIP Fluid, & Packed RBD Simulations!
I have way more examples on how the tornado force can be applied in various different types of simulations like Pyro, FLIP Fluid, & Packed RBD! The possibilities are endless! The Vellum Paper Tornado is only the beginning and tip of the ice berg on possibilities of what this is capable of!
I mean just look at some of the images below! I love how the tornado velocity field guiding the Pyro creates very interesting shapes!
