Lip Sync in Houdini using Houdini’s Voice Tools

I never would have imagined in a million years that Houdini could do Lip Sync. Houdini can do a lot! I knew that. And Lip Sync! This totally blew my mind when I realized this and rediscovered these Voice nodes inside Houdini’s CHOPS context. That’s probably because I don’t use CHOPS very often, except for an occasional noise animation here and there.

CHOPS has the ability to analyze voice syllables like certain vowel sounds that make up the English language and detect these syllables during speech. The best thing is, you build your own syllable library, or more formally called “phoneme” library. Since the phoneme library is based on your own voice, I find that’s it’s really accurate.

The most tedious part of the whole Lip Sync workflow with CHOPS in Houdini is creating the 41 different blendshapes for each mouth shape on the mesh. But I created an HDA to generate the mouth blendshapes procedurally so it’ll only take a few clicks to generate. This was inspired because I didn’t want to sculpt all 41 mouth shapes every time I wanted to Lip Sync a new character and so my Facial Deforming HDA Tools were born!
